Climb the narrow staircase to the second floor of a building on Maneki-dori in Shinjuku Golden Gai, and you'll find "smile (Sumire)" — a snug counter bar where a handful of seats fill the room. What sets this spot apart is the staff's improvised "kama uranai" (intuitive fortune-telling): after a quiet moment of eye contact, they offer a pointed read on a guest's habits or blind spots, turning strangers into laughing, self-reflective regulars. The relatively early opening hours — 8 p.m. on weekdays and 7 p.m. on weekends — make it a natural first stop for Golden Gai newcomers. Solo visitors and women are said to find it easy to walk in. That said, current staff and hours may have changed, so checking the official Instagram (@09smile23) before visiting is recommended. With the night-lit alley visible from the second-floor window, you'll likely find yourself ordering just one more.
