Up a narrow staircase on the second floor of Golden Gai's 5th alley, "red." was opened in 2014 by Smappa!Group, the Kabukicho collective better known for its host clubs. The interior evokes an American general store crammed with quirky knick-knacks, with around ten counter seats and a prized loft perch above. That loft is the heart of the experience: staff cheerfully pass drinks and snacks up with a casual "yo!"—a moment of warmth you won't easily find in the other 299 bars on this strip. The signature drinks are cold-brew coffee made from beans roasted by a long-established Shinjuku coffee shop, paired with the house's much-talked-about hot dogs. Open from 3 p.m. through to 5 a.m. on Thursdays to Sundays, it's one of the few spots in Golden Gai welcoming guests well before sunset. Young, friendly staff make solo visitors feel at home almost immediately. If you're looking for a low-pressure first stop in Golden Gai, this is a fine place to push open the door.
