PITOU

Bar PITOU is easy to spot on Hanazono 5th Street in Shinjuku Golden Gai — look for the brick facade and stained-glass window. Open since December 2003, it has been one of Golden Gai's rare torchbearers for natural wine for over two decades. The owner is a photographer who studied fine arts in the UK, and every detail of the interior reflects her eye: walls layered in gradations of deep crimson, a vintage chandelier overhead, and decorative paper garlands imported from India. A rotating selection of natural wines is always available by the glass, with a strong focus on Japanese producers from Yamagata, Hokkaido, Tokushima, and beyond. Staff fluent in English and French draw a loyal international crowd. With only around five counter seats on the ground floor, it's naturally suited to solo visitors and easy conversation. It's also one of the very few smoke-free natural wine bars in Golden Gai — a genuine rarity. If you're after that perfect glass rather than a lecture on terroir, push open the door.
