A veteran bar in Akarui Hanazono 1st Street with roots in the 1970s. Once a hub for politicians and cultural figures in the underground scene, it still hosts jazz performances and art exhibitions. Open 6pm–5am (closed January 1). Tel: 03-3208-0627.
Shinjuku Golden Gai is Tokyo's most iconic bar district — 295+ unique bars packed into six narrow alleys in Kabukicho, Shinjuku. A 5-minute walk from Shinjuku Station East Exit, next to Hanazono Shrine. Featured in the Michelin Green Guide, it has been a cultural institution since the 1950s.
