Tucked away on the second floor of Hanazono 3rd Street in Shinjuku Golden Gai, "Shurandô Bergerac (Bar Bergerac)" is a snack bar with a theatrical pedigree—originally run by actor Ihara Keisuke, then passed on to fellow actor Asô Keitarô. Staff rotate by day of the week, with the beloved Kyoko Mama taking the counter every Friday. The eight seats fill quickly with a comfortable blend of cigarette smoke and overlapping conversations, where strangers become acquaintances without even trying. An unspoken rule keeps things light—no work complaints, just easy talk at a respectful distance—making it surprisingly welcoming for solo visitors. Cover charge is ¥1,000 (with an o-toshi snack), karaoke runs ¥200 per song, and drinks start at ¥600, mainly Japanese sake. Climb those stairs when you need to set down one of the day's burdens before heading home.
